US Gold Depository at Fort Knox
The nations of the world use gold as a medium of exchange in monetary transactions. A large proportion of American gold stocks is stored in the vault of the Fort Knox Bullion Depository. Fort Knox located 30 miles southwest of Louisville, Kentucky and it is supervised by the Director of the Mint.
Gold in the Bullion Depository consists of bars about the size of ordinary clay bricks (7 x 3 5/8 x 1 3/4 inches) that weigh about 27.5 pounds each (about four hundred troy ounces; one troy ounce being nearly equivalent to one and one tenth avoirdupois ounces.) They are stored without wrappings in Fort Knox's vault compartments.
